Meteor Raksasa Terangi Langit Kanada

SASKATOON, MINGGU — Para ilmuwan berharap dapat menemukan serpihan dari sebuah meteor yang bercahaya terang benderang melintas di langit sebelum jatuh ke Bumi atau di wilayah Kanada. Ilmuwan dari planetarium Universitas Calgary Alan Hilderbrand menyebut meteor itu sebagai salah satu meteor terbesar yang pernah terlihat di Kanada dalam satu dasawarsa terakhir.

Tayangan gambar video menunjukkan gulungan bola api yang melintas cepat Kamis (20/11) malam waktu setempat di atas wilayah Saskatoon. Gulungan bola api ini semakin membesar dan bercahaya lebih terang sebelum hilang saat mendekati Bumi.

Hildebrand mengaku, Jumat (21/11) telah menerima sekitar 300 laporan e-mail dari beberapa saksi mata. Beberapa saksi mata di Provinsi Alberta mengaku melihat paduan berbagai warna dari meteor yang jatuh ke Bumi ini.

"Tadinya saya pikir kembang api," kata Marcel Gobeil, seorang petani yang menjadi salah satu saksi mata. "Sebelumnya saya tak pernah melihat benda seperti itu dengan kilauan warna hijau dan biru yang kemudian berubah menjadi merah menyala. Gulungan bola api itu sangat besar."

Sementara saksi mata lainnya, Shawn Mitchler, sedang mengisi tangki mobilnya dengan bensin di Radisson saat ia melihat kilatan cahaya meteor selama 10 detik. "Jantung saya berdebar kencang karena saya tak mengenali benda tersebut. Benda itu menyerupai kembang api atau sebuah rudal yang sedang jatuh ke Bumi," akunya.

Polisi tak meragukan laporan tersebut. Ini karena sebuah kamera video kendaraan patroli polisi berhasil merekam gambar meteor yang jatuh ke Bumi itu.
